It's finally here - NaNoWriMo 2013!
This week has felt six years long, I'm so excited to get started. They're anticipating half a million people will sign up this November.
Will you be one of them?
People ask me, "What's NaNoWriMo all about?" They then proceed to ask all sorts of questions like, "Who wins?" and "Does it cost anything?" and "What about copyright?" and "You submit your novel and then they decide whose is the best. . . ."
My answer is that the goal is to write a 50K word novel in 30 days.
Next come the questions about publishing, and critiquing, and editing, and judging. . . .
All that is only if you want to go that route. You choose. It's totally up to you.
Do it for the sake of doing it. Do it because it's a challenge and you never know what you'll learn from it. Do it because a lot of other people are doing it and they're having a blast, banging out that many words. It's just plain FUN!
And I guarantee you'll learn something. You'll come away a better person from having tried.
Even if you don't make the 50K goal.
I like to say I've learned more from doing NaNo than anything else in my life except having my son. It teaches you a lot about yourself and what you're capable of, while having a terrific time and meeting new friends and just living life to the fullest for those 30 days. Some of us aren't so fond of actual rollercoasters -- but NaNo is a rollercoaster in its own right. One that I personally get onto every single year, without fail.
This year marks my 10th year doing NaNo. Some years have been better than others, but every year has absolutely grown me as a person. Even if I never published anything, I would still do NaNo. The friends I've made, the challenges I've overcome, the courage I've found that I didn't know I had.
Yeah, that's what it's about. Becoming a better me. And that's always a challenge.
One that's well worth it. :)
